“I associate many things with many things”

by David Sturtz

Along with the mandatory annual viewing of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (Netflix), I enjoy pulling out another classic this time of year — Desk Set (1957) (Netflix). It’s not really a holiday movie, but an office Christmas party scene towards the middle does get the action rolling.

Information scientist/computer engineer Richard Sumner (Spencer Tracy) is charged with digitizing the operations of one Bunny Watson (Katharine Hepburn), special librarian at the Federal Broadcasting Company. There is a misunderstanding (of course) wherein Bunny and her staff, which includes Joan Blondell, think they’re to be replaced by Sumner’s electronic brain, EMERAC (who gets the best line, “Beep beep beep boop”).

Oh, and Sumner and Bunny fall in love. Aww.

I’m glad to see National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on many Mandatory X-mas Movie lists, as I have encouraged my own family to watch and love it annually some time ago. ‘Tis a wonderful film.

As for Desk Set: It sounds quite good, and I’m going to check it out very soon.

Thanks, Dave!
